I went to see Hisham Matar (and two other authors) speak today. He was born in New York but grew up in Libya and then went to boarding school when he was older in England. And when he came to England - sometime around the 80s - he had to assume a fake identity so for a few years he had to answer to a different name and pretend to have a different background, etc because this was when Gaddafi would use children to infiltrate families and Matar’s family was trying to protect themselves from this. But anyway, after being at this boarding school for about a year, a new boy joined the school and him and Matar became best friends - I’m not sure how their relationship ended or continued because Matar was really reluctant to talk about it but he did say that this boy he befriended was from Libya and his father worked for the Gaddafi regime. So he basically willingly lied to someone he considered to be his best friend (though it’s not like he could have done otherwise.) He said he wrote an article about it but I can’t find it anywhere!!!
