mispredictions:

Films that deserve a fighting awards chance | Weekend
Filmed in a way that looks like a snapshot from a disposable camera, Weekend operates in quiet, tenderly realized moments and hushed whispers. Self-references (like Glen’s gay-themed art project he doesn’t expect straight people to show up to) and subtle snarks (“is this our Notting Hill moment?”) highlights this film’s clever subversions of romantic comedies and spinning of the conventions of gay films on its head. The performances of Tom Cullen and Chris New lend to each other in their characters’ reactions to one another and their respectively slowly cracking exteriors in some of the most natural performances of the year. Seminal moment though it seems for queer cinema, the story is (at the risk of sounding gay-cliché) all too universal. Anyone should be able to relate to falling in love at the worst time, and as such the ending works like a punch to the gut.
